Seller Standards & Sustainability Guidelines

Welcome to the Sustainable Marketplace Community

We’re very happy that you’re joining us and hope you will benefit as much from being a part of the marketplace community as buyers will from purchasing your products and services.

Sustainable Marketplace is a niche marketplace website for anything and everything needed to live, work and play for a sustainable future. We want to connect ethical, sustainable businesses with the fast-growing group of conscientious consumers who believe in sustainable corporate governance, ethical sourcing and production, and their own individual responsibility to consume with the principles of sustainability in mind.

We also want to be a knowledge sharing hub through our blogs, newsletters, social media posts and stories, and the information provided by our retail sellers on their shop and product pages.

To be a community of like-minded businesses and individuals (both sellers and buyers alike), we believe it’s important that we all work together in shaping, defining and promoting sustainability as one voice.

Our aim is to promote sustainability in a positive manner and try to avoid green washing wherever possible. Therefore, we ask all our sellers to please adhere to these standards and guidelines at all times. If you believe we can make improvements to our guidelines, please contact us.

Section 1 - How we define sustainability

In the earliest days, when we were still just exploring the idea of a sustainable marketplace, we immediately realised that the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals are a perfect framework to define our purpose.

The 17 goals are:

Goal 1 End poverty in all its forms everywhere

Goal 2 End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

Goal 3 Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

Goal 4 Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

Goal 5 Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Goal 6 Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

Goal 7 Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

Goal 8 Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable eco nomic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

Goal 9 Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

Goal 10 Reduce inequality within and among countries

Goal 11 Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

Goal 12 Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Goal 13 Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

Goal 14 Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

Goal 15 Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

Goal 16 Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels

Goal 17 Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development

Section 2 - Getting your products on the website

All retail sellers on Sustainable Marketplace have their own (secure) seller account and portal. Your advertisements can be uploaded to your Sustainable Market place seller portal using one of the following methods:

  • Full API integration with your ecommerce platform. Full integration is possible with the most commonly used ecommerce platforms (Shopify, Neto, WooCommerce and BigCommerce). Please note, we pass on the monthly fee of $30 we get charged for full API integration.

  • A completed CSV template (we will provide the template).

  • A completed XML feed (we will provide the template).

  • And finally, you can also manually create your advertisements in your seller portal, and we will definitely assist you with that if you need us to.

Other items needed to set up your store and product pages on Sustainable Marketplace are:

  • Your logo.

  • Product images in PNG, GIF, JPG or JPEG format, ideally 784 x 480 pixels or similar, and file size of 32MB or less. For the purpose of consistency, we prefer product images on a white background or with padding.

  • Any barcodes you own and want to use (this is optional).

  • Your store policies (Shipping, Exchange & Returns).

Your advertisements may not contain any links, while text in photos may be rejected by Google.

There are a number of options to enhance the marketing of your store and products on Sustainable Marketplace, for example with product media such as brochures and videos. You can upload up to 5 PDF files (of up to 32MB each) or upload URL’s to your YouTube or custom video.

We will assist you throughout the onboarding process and can provide ongoing support. We will begin uploading up to 20 of your ads but it is your responsibility to complete the uploading of your advertisements and manage your seller account.

Section 3 - Maintenance of your seller portal

The integrity of the website is important for the ongoing success of your store and brand, and that of other retail sellers and advertisers.

As an advertiser on our website, we ask you to ensure all your content complies with the Sustainable Development Goals.

All advertisements on Sustainable Marketplace are vetted before publication for this reason, but we do also view it as a self-regulatory system, where retail sellers take responsibility for the products they advertise.

So as to not disappoint or turn away customers on the website, we urge you to please keep your advertising up to date and remove ads for products that are sold out or obsolete.

Section 4 – Remittance and payments

We endeavour to remit the value of your sales (minus the commission and merchant fee) within 7 days from the order date. In order for us to make those payments to you, please provide your bank account details.

  • Account name
  • BSB
  • Account number

Once your bank details have been added to your account you can change them at any time. Please note that these details are stored securely in our system and only you and your account manager can access them.

If you choose to connect your ecommerce store with full API integration, we will pass on the monthly fee of $30 charged to us, and we will also require your credit card details, including:

  • Name on card
  • Card number
  • Expiry date
  • CVV
