You’re reading our first ever blog, WOOHOO! Our marketplace has been a while in the making so we’re pretty chuffed you’re here. Thank you!
So what is Sustainable Marketplace?
We're an online marketplace, just like our much bigger brothers and sisters: eBay, Gumtree, and Amazon. Much like Airbnb, Bike Exchange and Uber, we are a niche marketplace. We connect buyers with sellers: customers wanting to buy sustainable and ethical products with the stores and service providers who sell them. Our goal for Sustainable Marketplace is to be a one stop destination for people who want to live sustainably. The go-to place for anything and everything needed to live, work and play for a sustainable future.
Why a marketplace?
Because we believe that by working together as a group, we can make our sustainability message a lot stronger and easier to find. Think of us as the town square of old: a place where people come together to browse and buy products and services, get advice, share news, and learn about the latest science and innovations.
How does it work?
At Sustainable Marketplace you’ll find all your favourite brands, products, and services in one place and you can browse, shop, and make bookings from anywhere and on any device. We have one secure checkout (with various payment options) and once your order is finalised, you’ll automatically receive an order confirmation in your inbox, followed by a shipping (or click & collect) notification. Soon after you’ll receive your purchases, shipped to you by the store that is selling them on the marketplace.
Who is at Sustainable Marketplace?
First, to the brands and stores who put their trust in the idea of a sustainable marketplace before we even launched: you are true pioneers! Welcome and thank you for joining us!
We’re ambitious and want Sustainable Marketplace to be a true one stop shop. If you can’t find what you’re after today, check again in a little while because you can rest assured, we’re working on it! Or better still: let us know what products or services you think are missing on the website and we’ll let our retailers know. Our contact email is firstname.lastname@example.org
These are the types of stores and products we think are a great match with Sustainable Marketplace:
Eco stores – if you’re looking for new ways to make your household or workplace more sustainable, explore their growing range of innovative, waste reducing, reusable and recyclable products.
Organic stores – offering products and produce that are made or grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial chemicals.
Ethical fashion – look amazing AND be confident that your new clothes are good for the people who made them and our planet!
Personal care – skin, hair, and health care products, that aren’t tested on animals, don’t have nasty chemicals in them, and do a fantastic job of looking after your body.
Service providers, repairers, and up-cyclers – for your clothing, furniture and other bits and bobs that are sitting un-used in your wardrobe or shed. Have them repaired, re-sized or re-invented and keep loving them.
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) - invest in a local grower and receive your share of the season's harvest.
Eco tourism – plan your next eco-friendly holiday leaving small footprints but creating a big impact in sustaining our environment.
Ethical finance – banks, superfunds and financial advisers who invest sustainably and not in non-renewable resources or industries that have a negative impact on our community.
Educators – community colleges, TAFE’s and universities offering courses and degrees in environmental and sustainable science.
Reduce, reuse & recycle – after all, what is more supportive of a circular economy than purchasing second-hand goods?
And finally: who are we?
We’re a small team with a big idea. We’re a family of eco/enviro enthusiasts who believe Sustainable Marketplace can be our way of doing ‘our bit’. We love our planet. We love our community! As regular bushwalkers and admirers of the Australian landscape, in recent years we’ve become increasingly concerned about what we see and hear. What started years ago as a need to learn about reducing our household’s carbon footprint, slowly but surely developed into a much bigger idea of creating a space for a whole community; for individuals, families and business operators much like ourselves to come together with sustainability, the principles of reduce, re-use and recycle first and foremost in mind.
We are quite proud of what we’ve achieved so far (with the help of a lot of experts!), so thank you again for being here and reading this. Visit again soon and see how the community is growing.
